SUBMISSIONS
Folks, I can't do it alone anymore. Between reading lots of books, trying to get published, ranting angrily, playing the bagpipes and writing about all of the above, I'm spread thin. Don't get me wrong, the book reviews will continue, just not as often as I would like. Unless you help.
Got a book (or an author) you love? Want to recommend it to people? Want to dazzle the Internet world with your insightful brilliance, or just pontificate pretentiously? Do a guest review of a book. You'll be saving me some work, and on top of that, you'll be doing a service to other readers. Currently, my book reviews receive about 100-120 unique hits a day. It's not the New York Times, but it's still a respectable number of people who waste time surfing my site rather than being productive elsewhere.
If you are considering contributing a review, the best thing you can do is look at some of the reviews I've done to familiarize yourself with what I'm looking for regarding format and content. That being said, here are the official submission guidelines:
1) SEND ALL SUBMISSIONS TO
angrypiper@angrypiper.com. Please include "Book Review" in the email subject
heading.
2) Don't review a book that has already been reviewed on my site. If you want to
post a contrary opinion to a review, that's what the feedback link is for. I
will eventually do a post of all the comments I have received at the end of the
year; eventually, if interest warrants it, I may host a forum.
3) Please review only books you recommend. Don't use this as an opportunity to
tell people how much a book or a writer sucks. That's not what my website is
about. Read my Preface for more information.
4) Don't send me your your 25 page term
paper on East of Eden, your doctoral
thesis on Ayn Rand or your manuscript on the spiritual symbolism inherent in J.
R. R. Tolkien's myth cycle. My book reviews are short for a reason; people
have short attention spans, particularly on the Web. Try to keep it about 2
pages or less, please.
5) Do not send me a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book. If you are unclear
how to summarize, please look at any of my reviews. If reviewing an author,
please provide a BRIEF overview of their body of work, examples can be found
here and here.
6) If at all possible, do not give away the book's ending. People want to find
that out for themselves by reading the book.
7) Use a spell check program and edit your work. I reserve the right to edit for
grammar and spelling. I won't change the content of your review, but if you
can't spell to save your life and are unfamiliar with the concept of spell
check, you'll have to accept some editing.
8) Submissions should be in MS Word or Plain Text formats (.doc or .txt) I use a
PC.
9) All submissions will be credited, along with a link to the author's email (if
desired) so you can receive feedback directly from readers. I'll even post
amusing and/or factual reviewer bios, or you can supply your own. If you don't
want to be linked to your work, tell me; I'll still make sure you get feedback,
it'll just come from me and the rest of the world won't know your email address.
10) Unlike other areas of Angrypiper.com, the Book Reviews are rated PG. In other words, don't use profanity to make your point. This is the high-class part of the site. :)
Please feel free to email me with any questions.
